Real Estate and Mortgages
For most people, buying a home is the largest purchase they ever make and a mortgage is the biggest loan they will ever have.
Susan believes that both buyers and sellers should have a clear understanding of what their rights and duties are when buying or selling their home or farm. Susan insists on face-to-face meetings with every client to review the purchase and mortgage documents and to answer any questions they may have before those documents are signed.
Wills and Estates
Anyone with property, a spouse, or children should have a will.
Susan advises her clients about how, if they die without a will, the law says their property will be distributed between their spouse and children and who will become responsible to look after their children and the money from their estates.
When her clients are ready to prepare their wills, Susan discusses with them what provisions they may make in a will, and she makes a special effort to prepare wills that take into account the special needs of each family, such as ensuring the children will have money available for education.
Susan also discusses with her clients the benefits of making a personal directive or an enduring power of attorney and can prepare these documents.
Corporate Commercial Law
The owners of small businesses and corporations often run into difficulty because no one has told them about the legal requirements of keeping a corporation registered or because they have not had legal advice about a contract before they signed it.
Susan discusses with her clients their duties and rights as owners or directors of a corporation. Susan advises them what that agreement really means and what their options in law really are, and can take the necessary court proceedings to enforce an agreement if necessary.
Family Law
Going through a family breakdown is always very stressful for both the separating spouses and their children.
Susan helps clients deal with all legal aspects of the breakdown of marital and common-law relationships. Susan assists spouses and former spouses in negotiating settlements for the separation of their property and financial resources and helps them develop parenting plans that are acceptable to both parents. If negotiations are not successful, Susan is an experienced litigator who strives to manage each case through the court system in a manner that is as efficient, fast and as least costly as possible.
Susan is also an experienced Collaborative Law lawyer and mediator and has served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Collaborative Professionals (Medicine Hat) since the association was established in 2000.
Collaborative Family Law is a method of resolving family disputes that involves each client's lawyer, but does not involve a judge. For more information about Collaborative Law, see the website at www.collaborativelaw.ca. |
